Drapery handles things a blind does not. It covers a whole wall rather than an opening, it softens a room where every line is straight and hard, and it holds enough sound to change how a large living room feels.
Most of the time we hang it over a shade that is already there. The shade does the daily work for light and privacy, and the panels stay open at either side to frame the window. That gives the window a height it does not have on its own, particularly if the rod goes up close to the ceiling.
Since the fabric is the first thing anyone sees, this is the product where the choice really happens with samples in the room. A tone that looks right on a screen can turn completely once your own window light comes through it.
